It’s no secret that the driving force behind both the first novels and seasons of the time-traveling romance Outlander is the will they/won’t they/dear god how ever will they love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser. But there are only so many times writer Diana Gabaldon and the Starz series based on her books can pull the the Frasers apart (though, don’t fret, she still has a trick or two up her sleeve in that regard). That’s why fleshing out the side characters of the story are so important. After a significant win in that regard last week with the introduction of adult Lord John Grey (David Berry), Outlander doubled down this week’s episode by paying off on the Season 2 flirtation between Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin) and Claire’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) as the pair share their first tentative kiss. But as the show’s new young lovers told VF.com in an interview last month, there’s a surprising secret behind their evident chemistry.

Rankin, who started his career in the world of comedy like the Scottish sketch series Burnistoun, balked a bit during the Television Critics’ Association Summer press tour when someone asked him what it was like to be a sex symbol. The actor, who is forever cracking wise, simply doesn’t see him that way. And Skelton is here to further break the spell of Rankin as dashing, serious, romantic leading man. “Richard Rankin between takes is always trying to get the comedy in,” she said throwing a teasing glare in his direction. “Sometimes you’re trying to do a particularly emotional scene where Claire is leaving Brianna possible for the rest of her life and Brianna is breaking down in tears and Richard Rankin is prodding your back and whispering jokes in your ear. One moment of seriousness, please?” Her gentle tone and smiles in his direction, though, belie any frustration she might have had with him during that Season 2 scene.
It will be very interesting to watch the relationship between Roger and Brianna grow.
