Saturday night’s Outlander finale went where television has never gone before. And in the process stirred up quite an interesting conversation about sexual violence. But Ronald D. Moore wasn’t the one who created the story, it was author Diana Gabaldon back in 1991.
On Sunday we had the immense pleasure of chatting up Gabaldon prior to a Q&A and signing at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles (where several of the show’s iconic costumes were also on display), where we dished about the subversive nature of the story, the public’s reaction to sexual violence, and what she’s looking forward to in season two. Here’s an edited and truncated version of our chat:
It was the episode that “Outlander” fans had long been awaiting — and dreading. In this Starz drama’s first-season finale, the 18th-century Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) submitted to the brutal sexual advances of the evil redcoat Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) in an attempt to free our heroine, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe).
Here’s a new interview with Grant O’Rourke and Ron D.Moore from Access Hollywood
From Access Hollywood:
Cows to the resc-moo!
There were a number of dark and disturbing moments in the bold “Outlander” finale on Saturday night, but at Wentworth Prison, there was one memorable light one involving livestock.
A herd of cattle helped save Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Thanks to Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) leaving a back door to Wentworth Prison unlocked, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and the boys – Rupert (Grant O’Rourke) and Angus (Stephen Walters) – were able to use the hairy beasts to rescue Jamie.
If you thought things on Outlander were getting dire, you haven’t seen anything yet.
In the penultimate episode of Starz’s time-travel saga, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) was feeling the wrath of Black Jack Randall’s (Tobias Menzies) sadistic torture during his Wentworth prison stay. Bloodied, battered and emotionally (and physically) scarred, it’s safe to say, Jamie’s life will never be the same again.
