“I think it is interesting he knows the Browns are in town, and he doesn’t deal with it straight away,” Heughan says. “He’s very calculated. He’s very cold in his vengeance. But I think that is what has always been cool about Jamie. He knows how to wield his violence and it is great to be reminded of that. It is a satisfactory ending, I think, for Jamie to get rid of the Browns.”
The episode is bookended with intense scenes featuring Brown, having also opened with Jamie’s vision of a future that, thankfully, never comes to pass. It shows Claire tearfully stepping up onto the gallows in Wilmington, looking out on Brown and an audience watching her be pushed to her death.
It is a call back to the first moments of Season 4, when Claire and Jamie watched their friend Gavin be hanged by the same noose in the streets of Wilmington. Balfe says shooting such a scene is never pleasant, but it is a surreal reality of the series.
“It’s never very fun to have a noose put around your neck,” she says. “In some ways, it’s interesting in how they film it and how the stunt guys set up the shot and how it will all happen. But any time you bring your character to the precipice of death, it is always a bit strange. Then again, it’s funny on Outlander because that’s what you do on a Tuesday morning and then I guess we’re moving on!”

“Yes, Jamie is definitely bothered [that he can’t be the one to save Claire],” New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon tells Parade, “but 1) he wants Claire back urgently, and 2) she’s still in danger, as a) the Cruizer [the Royal Navy ship where Claire is being held] may be attacked and sunk by the rebels, and b) if anything dire happens to Mrs. Governor, the Gov will likely blame Claire and either hang her or send her to England for prosecution.
“Jamie has to get her back quickly, but he has nobody with him save Ian, and neither of them are getting on the ship undetected. He’s cornered and honest enough to admit it, no matter how galling it may be to admit. Also, humble (and desperate) enough to see that Tom’s offer is the only immediate possibility of getting Claire back. He’s also honest enough to admit that Tom’s love for Claire and his bravery in laying down his own life for her is worthy of respect.”

He is a devout Quaker and a brilliant surgeon. He’s an inherently good person, kind, loyal, and very protective of his sister Rachel. He’s a voracious learner and relishes the opportunity to better his skills as a surgeon by learning from Claire and very much regards her as a mentor and friend.
What can viewers expect from the new season and your character?
They can expect war, epic battle scenes, struggle, sacrifice, pain and loss, but love is always at the heart of it. And, from my character Denzell, they can expect just an intrinsically kind, protective, decent man.
