In Sunday’s episode of Outlander, a defeated Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin) has an emotional breakdown in captivity and then gives up an opportunity to escape the Mohawk by attempting to save Father Alexandre. Here, Rankin reflects on his most emotional scene to date and explains why Roger behaved a lot like Claire in that final scene.

When a scene is scored with Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” you know it’s going to be a moving moment. In this week’s episode of Outlander, “Providence,” Roger (Richard Rankin) had the chance to escape the Mohawk village where he’s being held captive, but he opted to turn around. He’d befriended a Frenchman — the fellow fool for love, Father Alexandre Ferigault (Yan Tual) — who, despite Roger’s counsel in their shared “idiot hut,” chose a slow, painful death on a simmering pyre rather than baptize the baby he’d fathered with the tribe’s healer, Johiehon (Sera-Lys McArthur). The Mohawk supported the couple’s union, but Ferigault believed that, as a fallen priest, his blessing would damn his daughter, so he refused to give it.

Roger MacKenzie has covered a lot of ground on this season on Outlander. He’s traveled through the stones and across an ocean in search of Brianna. And just as Roger and Bree finally found each other through time and space, they were quickly torn apart again, and Roger was forced to work on Stephen Bonnet’s ship as it traveled up the coast of colonial America. A horrible misunderstanding prevents a second reunion for the couple, and sets into motion Roger’s most recent journey with the Mohawk people, who marched him from North Carolina to New York state in captivity.
