The inevitable confrontation with the Native people was tense. It was not addressed… but surprise! One of the tribesmen speaks perfect English. How so? And I mean without any affect or accent. Ok… and big big big change over the bear scare. Why? The ep moved so fast for me I was stunned when it was over. So pacing was not an issue. I’ve only watched once. Of course I’ll watch many times more. 😀
North America was colonized in the early 1600s. It would have been quite common for them to speak very well in English as at that point, they would have been in contact with English for quite a bit.
Loved the episode “Common Ground”. Knowing how they need to condense such large books and make changes for the viewing audience, I was really pleased with the changes they have made so far.
I enjoyed the episode. I was a bit confused by the bear adaptation but when I saw the commentary afterwards, I thought their choice was good.
Loved it. Had the feel of S1 when Claire and Jamie were giggling by the tree. I didn’t mind the bear change but the natives didn’t look or speak like the Native Americans. It brought me out of the story. It reminded me of the way they were depicted in the early westerns. Along the lines of using black makeup on white people to depict blacks. We do better than that these days.
You say the Native Americans didn’t look or speak like real NA………..They are ‘real’ Native Americans. They cast people from First People tribes in Canada and other areas…….they are all actual Native Americans. In the book there were a few who did speak English having learned it from traders and mountain men. There have been several mentions of how they cast so many Natives and why they went to Canada to do so. Just kinda curious how your think natives looked, spoke, and acted back in the 1700’s????
The fur trading market was huge back then. So it would be normal for them to be able to communicate both in English and French. For the First Nations in Canada, it would have been mostly French as New France was colonized by the French and they had a good relationship with many First Nations.

The people that are “Native Americans” in Outlander are First Nations from Canada. The casting call was made in Canada for First Nations, therefore the actors are in fact, truly First Nations.
Absolutely loved every minute of Episode 4. So glad the Native Americans from Canada and elsewhere were brought in for their parts. I remember the advertisements reaching out to the various Indigenous groups to go to Scotland for interviews. With all the activity at the night time, it is a wonder anyone got any sleep. I loved that Sam wore the glasses he used in Season 3. Jamie, ever the wary, cautious, and deep thinking Scot, and still that quaint little reserve he had. Young Ian, so sweet natured and courageous. That man in the bear skin – terrifying. It was not unusual for that to happen (sort of a boogey man approach). Claire right in there, enjoying their freedom and adventure. An amazing woman. Poor Roger, in a situation, where he finds out about Brianna’s Mother and Father, and he must phone her to tell her that he has news of her Mother.

I agree this episode flew by – even after my 3rd viewing. BTW, Thank you to Starz for repeating the episodes.
1.)I During my 2nd and 3rd viewing, I wondered (briefly) about what it took to film all the scenes with the Indians and if the filming went to the Indians or if the Indians were brought Scotland. Regardless a lot of work and filming integrity.
2.) I was happy to see the selection for Grandmother Indian . I don’t know her name but have seen her many times before. Excellent.
3.) I appreciated seeing Claire’s glowing happiness in just being with Jaimie despite having no 1970 amenities.
4. ) Fabulous scenery.
5,) credits to special effects and make-up units once again.
6.) Rogers’s expressions were worth a thousand words! Fabulous!
7.) Bear fight: I thought for a bit I wasn’t remembering correctly because the change fit so well.
8.) Sam’s versatility is always a pleasure for me to watch.

9……the only flinch I had was in believing a tame horse could have been attacked like that and not screamed to wake everyone in the county….never mind about Rollo.
But still…20 on a scale from 1 to 10. This is my all time favorite series.
I liked the format you used above. It is such a pleasure to watch Sam Heughan in action – an amazing talent. A very wary, shrewd and intelligent Jamie, always on guard, protecting his family and forging his own way in the New World. The bit about the horse – it is a wonder it even let anyone near after it had been attacked. However, it lived true movie style. So much happened in this episode – loved it. Claire is at her happiest when she and Jamie are living the life they fought so long for. It is a little funny, but in the book Jamie was wondering if she would find it boring being with him on a day to day basis, carving a life in the new world, he needn’t have worried, nothing is ever boring with the Frasers, there is always something exciting happening.
Wonderful episode. I really enjoyed every bit of it. It had pace, excitement and great acting. Whoever wrote this episode please continue. For me Outlander has come alive again. I felt the last episodes lacklustre I’m afraid to say. I know it deviated from the book but I’m not going to be picky about that. Great episode.
