Caitriona Balfe knew there was a loyal “Outlander” fanbase when she took on the role of Claire for the Starz adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s series of best-selling novels, but she was surprised at the response she’s gotten from fans.
“They genuinely want to tell me their stories, which is not what I expected. But it’s really humbling,” says the Irish actress. “You have women come up to you who have obviously dealt with things like miscarriage, losing a loved one and losing a child and other things that have happened on the show,” she explains. “And a lot of them want to share those experiences with me with me.”

The Droughtlander is almost over, Outlander fans. To prepare for the upcoming third season, I sat down with stars Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, who joined the Starz drama at the end of season two as Brianna Randall and Roger Wakefield, respectively. In speaking with me, the two actors definitely wanted to convey how incredible it has been to join a show with such a devoted fan base — a fan base they want to honor with their performances.
“The fans are crazy vocal, crazy passionate, they’re so committed to the show,” Rankin said. “It’s their baby for a lot of them, especially those who have been reading it for the last 20 years. I think it’s important to respect their idea of the show, of these characters.”
For Skelton, getting to meet fans in person at San Diego Comic-Con this year was a particularly special treat, especially since she’s been getting to chat with them online since being cast. “That’s the beautiful thing about social media, we interact with them a lot, don’t we?” she said. “It was so nice and so rewarding, because they really are invested in the characters. As an actor, you’re so defensive of your character, because you’re really in their head, so you love them no matter, but it’s lovely to see the fans have the same feeling for them.”
“They’re a very intelligent and articulate fan base as well,” Rankin added. “You can really get a good debate going with them if you want to.”

Sophie Skelton’s trademark long chestnut hair is knotted in a tight bun, precisely placed high atop her head—exactly the style you’d expect from a Royal Academy-trained ballerina. Despite the early call time for her first major fashion shoot, an unfazed Skelton arrives effortlessly polished post dance session in her hotel room (she always packs pointe shoes when traveling), sporting an adopted LA uniform: leggings, plain T-shirt, and an unassuming cardigan.
The 23-year-old UK native—who plays Outlander’s youthful, fiery, stalwart Brianna Randall Fraser, the daughter of an 18th-century Scottish Highlander and a time-traveling English WWII nurse—is fresh off her first trip to Comic-Con, where screaming devotees flocked in droves to see her. Despite some initial trepidation, Skelton, who grew up in the quiet English countryside of Manchester, says she was grateful to leave San Diego with a strengthened connection to her fans. “I was unsure what to expect, to be honest, but it was really rewarding,” she explains from the makeup chair of a sun-drenched studio. “They give us so much support, it’s nice to be able to give even a little bit back—to meet them and give them a hug, or whatever else they need.”

What can we expect from your character Roger Wakefield as Outlander returns?
The thing you need to remember when you find Roger in season three is that he’s in a bit of a surreal place. It is a bit of a mad world for him because all of a sudden time travel is a thing.
He seemed to be fairly open and accepting about the idea of time travel?
I think he really wants it to be possible and true just because of who Roger is and where he is from, the mythology and history that he grew up surrounded by.
Just the notion that it could be true at the end of season two was enough to excite him.
When you pick him up in season three, the world has been flipped upside because not only is time travel possible, but the girl he has fallen in love with, it turns out that her father is actually an 18th century Highland warrior.
You don’t ever get to see Roger much by himself. He is always either with Claire or with Brianna and they have very different effects on Roger.
When he is with Claire, he thinks with his head. When he is with Brianna, he much more thinks with his heart. That changes him from one moment to the next.
There are a few really beautiful moments in season three where you do see Roger by himself. When I read the script it hit me that Roger is really lonely in season three. He is very alone.
There is one particular moment – and I won’t give away when or the circumstances surrounding it – but hopefully you will watch it and say: ‘Oh, yeah, of course.’
Roger has just lost his father. He hasn’t had time to come to terms with that or grieved properly yet. Brianna and Claire turned up and since that point he has been very much kept occupied. They were a happy distraction. The circumstances they came along with were surreal and consuming.
He is very much caught in the crossfire between these two fiery, strong-minded and independent women. He is caught in the middle of them trying to mediate it.
