Season two finds the time-crossed lovers seeking refuge in France, where they try to infiltrate the French aristocracy and avert the Battle of Culloden, which Claire knows will end in a sweeping victory for the English in the Highlands and the deaths of most of Jamie’s friends and loved ones.

‘‘The second season is quite complex,’’ Heughan said. ‘‘There are so many facets. The first half takes us to the great halls of Versailles. We’re in Paris, and it’s very ostentatious. Jamie and Claire must learn the whole new world of the French.’’
