Spoilers after the jump!

Tonight’s Season 2 premiere of “Outlander” was probably not exactly what fans were expecting. Instead of immediately reuniting with passionate lovers Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in the 18th century, audiences were thrown for a loop as the episode opened with Claire having been hurtled forward through time back to the 1940s.

For much of the episode, viewers watched a distraught Claire struggle with her return to her own time of 1948 – as well as rebuild her strained relationship with Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), the husband she had involuntarily left behind at the start of Season 1. But even once the narrative switched back to the 1700s, and the story of Jamie and Claire’s arrival in France continued, it became evident early on that all was not going to be wine and roses for the happy couple as they began their mission to stop the Jacobite rebellion in its tracks.

“Through a Glass, Darkly” kicked off what is certain to be a host of showcase episodes for Irish actress Balfe, who has already picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the Starz series. Speakeasy caught up with her in New York earlier this week, where she spoke at length about tackling such heady material right from the get-go, while also previewing what’s to come in the second season of “Outlander.”
