Of all the reasons to watch the second season of Outlander—which premieres this Saturday, April 9, on Starz—design enthusiasts may find the sets most convincing. In the first few episodes, the historical drama trades in the hills of Scotland for the halls of 18th-century Paris as the time-traveling love story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) continues. “It’s completely different from last year,” says production designer Jon Gary Steele, who had the lucky task of re-creating Versailles and the court of Louis XV. “Paris was the height of fashion, architecture, and art,” he says, “so we were all excited about getting to do costumes and sets from that period.”
