Outlander author Diana Gabaldon was lured out of the Spartan employee break room of a Los Angeles Barnes & Noble Sunday with a Diet Coke and an enthusiastic round of applause from the hundreds of fans who had gathered. Some came as early as 6 a.m. to ensure they scored one of the 350 wristbands that secured entrance to her Q&A and signing. Before that, Gabaldon sat down with Vulture to speak about the intense, controversial finale, the disturbing add Tobias Menzies threw in with aplomb, her favorite and least favorite season-one changes, season two, and when to expect the next book. She admitted she still doesn’t know how she plans to end her best-selling franchise. (We have a thought: Maybe don’t?)
We talked to executive producer Ronald D. Moore about crafting such a simultaneously cruel and tender episode and where he will take the series in Season 2.
“Shock and horror are legitimate feelings to experience when you’re watching a story,” said Ron Moore in a recent interview about the Season 1 finale of Starz’s “Outlander.” And it was hard not to feel both emotions while watching “To Ransom a Man’s Soul,” in which we see in flashback the brutalization of Jamie, the show’s male hero, by the villain Black Jack Randall. As I wrote in my episode recap, because of the way it addressed sexual assault, it was “an important episode of television because it takes the time to fully explore what recovery actually looks like and understands that it’s by no means simple or straightforward.”
As compelling as Mr. Heughan is in the season’s final pair of episodes, Tobias Menzies, who plays Black Jack, is riveting. We spoke to Mr. Menzies about the season finale. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.
