*New* Interview with Caitriona Balfe from Express   1 comment

Here is a new interview with Catriona Balfe from Express

From Express:

The rape of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) by her husband Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) sparked anger among viewers for going too far by including the off-camera sexual assault.

Some fans criticised the show’s makers for including the scene purely for shock value given that it didn’t take place in the original books written by George RR Martin.

Ironically, Sophie admitted that “kind of loved” filming the Black Wedding scene after it screened a couple of week ago.

But Game of Thrones is not the only show to have contained rape scenes this year, BBC Two’s Australian convict drama Banished and Scottish time travel series Outlander have both featured sexual violence towards women.

While last year EastEnders character Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) was raped by Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo).

Despite the controversy surrounding these scenes, Outlander actress Caitriona Balfe says that on her show the rape cannot be discarded because it is a representation of life in 1743 Scotland.

“I think what we’re trying to show in that – during that time – sexual violence was a weapon used against women. It still is unfortunately, throughout a lot of the world and here,” Caitriona said.

“I think you can’t discard that. In that time women were like second-class citizens and the easy thing for men to do to intimidate that, to abuse them was to use sexual violence.

“And I think in a sense a lot of period pieces that’s the go-to but that’s the case. We’re trying to show life as close as possible to what it was back then,” the 35-year-old Irish actress told Express.co.uk in an interview earlier this year.

Caitriona plays Claire Beauchamp Randall, who is transported back in time from the 1940s and straight into the middle of Scottish civil war in the 18th Century.

It is there that she meets and falls in love with the rugged highlander called Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) – despite still being married to her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies) in 1945.
